Drama, Drama and MORE Drama

The drama between beauty influencers in the YouTube Community has sparked a lot of debate over the meaning of “friendship”. This weekend’s rift raft between James Charles and Tati, has caused individuals to take sides and question whether their “friendship” was indeed based on a ‘bad foundation’.

Content creators, bloggers, vloggers and influencers tend to claim “internet friendships”. According to Dictionay.com, a “friend” is a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard/ a person who gives assistance, patron, and support. In this regard, it is important to note a few things:

  1. Friendships are not based on followers, likes or comments. In terms of the drama between beauty influencers, Tati’s friendship was not transactional but rather she supported, mentored and nurtured James Charles.
  2. Some individuals are claiming that she is feeling threatened by his career, and wants to gain attention for the drama. This is highly disagreeable, as someone that watched her 43 minute video titled ‘Bye Sister’, one needs to see the full picture to really understand the drama. The drama goes beyond James actually promoting another brand on his instagram. It all boils down to someone’s behaviour and actions.
  3. The drama highlights the fact that fame, power and money can change almost anyone and if someone is telling you that you are doing something wrong, then you probably are. I truly understand her perspective of #SpeakYourTruth and that is exactly what she is doing, not for fame or more subscribers but to tell her side of her story. Just as she deserves to.

In conclusion, this drama shows that content creators, bloggers, vloggers and influencers are human, although they might portray a picture perfect life on camera, they have feelings.
